Dinner at Banana Café

Published by Miss Prissy on March 25th, 2012 - in Restaurant Reviews
Not to be confused with last year’s lunch review :)   The Handsome Captain™ and I decided on Friday night that we had not been to Banana Cafe in a while so after a glass of wine at Vino’s, we would walk over.   General Manager Extraordinaire Daniel offered us a table upstairs and since we’ve never dined there, gladly accepted.

We were so happy with that choice.

So often, people want simple food.  It matters not if they are locals or visitors…they want decent food at a fair price with no “frou-frous”.  Enter the American diner.

Key West doesn’t have many diners, though Greg and a few local friends are still mourning B’s Cuban Restaurant.  But I digress.

As many of you know, I enjoy bringing other viewpoints to my blog.  Some may agree with a prior review of mine, some may not, or some may review a place I have not.  The only prerequisite is that I respect their foodie opinion.

Meet my friend Tracey. Tracey has been visiting Key West since 1999 and has never met a cheeseburger, a beach, or a frozen drink she didn’t like!

You can read about her adventures in Key West and elsewhere on her blog, Escape From New York, at http://traceyg.travellerspoint.com.

It’s one of Prissy’s favorite blogs :)

La Trattoria Oceanside

Well, Prissy has finally done it.  After 2o visits and living here over a year, I have finally gotten the nerve to eat Italian food.  In all fairness, when I was a visitor I didn’t need to eat Italian in Key West because I lived in central New York with lots of first and second generation Italians.  I never wanted for Italian and besides, I’m half Italian and pretty adept at cooking.

This deep-rooted disdain for Italian anyplace south of Philadelphia started when I was a child traveling with my family.  Between tomato soup-looking sauces  that didn’t taste much better (this was years before vodka sauce became popular), “Italian” sausage that tasted like Jimmy Dean’s, and meatballs made of ground beef and little else, it was solidified in my mind that I would never eat Italian outside of the northeast unless it was Italy.  I think you already know how I feel about places like Orifice Garden.

Overboard Bar & Grill

So in early May, Greg and I were walking to our reservation at Fin and we saw activity at this area formerly known as the short-lived Bilmar Station and prior to that, Crabby Dick’s.  We saw ladders and a building permit on the door.  A month later, I met a young man who was going to interview for the new location and learned it would be called Overboard Bar & Grill (http://prissyinparadise.com/2011/06/overboard-bar-grill-the-former-crabby-dicks-property/).

Now that it has been open a couple of weeks, my handsome Captain and I thought it time to try it.  Considering the water was a bit rough to go to the sandbar, we said “why not today?”.
